“On Rock an’ Roll”

We Built This City – Daily Prompt

Perhaps it’s because I’m a native Californian, born in San Francisco and have resided in the gorgeous SF Bay Area all my life, that from the moment I spotted today’s Daily Prompt, I’ve been blessed (cursed) with a continuous looping of the infamous 1980’s recording, “We Built This City (on rock an’ roll)” in my head ALL DAY!

You remember this song about San Francisco, don’t you? Recorded by the San Francisco based band, “Starship,” which was formerly known as “Starship Jefferson” (temporary while in litigation for naming rights), which was formerly known as “Jefferson Starship,” which was formerly known as, “Jefferson Airplane.”

The single version of “We Built This City” reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in November, 1985, and number twelve in the U.K. The same year it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

On the other hand . . . 2004 Blender magazine named “We Built This City” by Starship the “Most Awesomely Bad Song of All Time” and Rolling Stone’s 2011 Readers’ Poll christened it the unmitigated winner (crushing the competition) of the 10 Worst Songs of the 1980s.

Most infamous, indeed. Only in San Francisco?

Usually, when I’m suffering from a relentless mind loop, if I write about it, the loop magically disappears.

Bye, bye  Starship . . .

  1. I did not think the song was bad! But I also didn’t know it was about San Francisco, so maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention. 🙂
